Do we need it all?

We live in peculiar times when it comes to IT. Moores law is still upheld more or less but great innovations arent around any longer like they used to be. Except in the world of AI which has exploded into the scene like a super nova out of nowhere. Much can be said about AI and much has already been written but Ill not delve into AI directly for now. It requires its own post. What Im more interested in now is how AI is literally being forced upon us by the tech companies and we, the users, arent even asked if we want the new invention or not. The big tech companies are betting big on AI and are obsessed in creating a market for a product which is neither well developed nor ready for market. This is most strikingly visual in how AI is being marketed in every IT corner, from operating systems, in general web use to backend work. Its literally everywhere. You cant escape it and for the regular IT user the most striking example of AI-ification is with Microsoft and Apple and how they claster AI on top of their respective operating systems. Of the two, Microsoft is the worse with ongoing work of integrating Copilot heavily into Windows and on phones the O365 suite now has an agressive AI integration. It is evident Microsoft is all in while Apple show some more restraint. It almost reeks of desperation how Microsoft goes about. You as user simply arent supposed to be able to escape AI. It is being integrated so deeply and in every nook and cranny that going about your business is almost impossible without bumping into it and while some might welcome this new overlord and replacement of critical and creative thinking there are others, me included, that are quite annoyed with the way Microsoft goes about its business. Windows is already very cluttered and in essence an orgy of options, buttons to push and leavers to pull without AI doing more cluttering. At the heart of the matter is in my opinion, do we need such an orgy of options to go about our day? Do we need tens of seemingly helpful apps or options to run our day? Is all this, AI included, for the betterment of our productivity or does it make us feel better for that matter? Im inclined to be of the opinion the answer to those questions is one big fat no. With an orgy of options comes the dilutation of function, i.e. the tools are so many and there is such rush to get them to the market the quality and functionality of said tools is greatly diminished and the contribution to productivity and happiness rapidly approaches nill. This is especially apparant with AI. Even if the technology behind it has matured somewhat, the development is lagging severely behind, especially due to there is no clear agreement on what purpose AI should serve the users. Its very much invented on the go and the net effect of that is a shoddy implementation which yields very little for the user in the end and we are not even debating the fact that AI will like or produce falsehoods up to fifty percent of the time. No, we are simply looking at its place in the IT world as a tool for the user. Shoddy implementation, rushed design and an orgy of options eventually lead to user disappointment and disillusionment which benefits no one, companies loose billions and the most important factor here, the user will eventually shy away cause of frustration and mental overload. So, if this is all going to the shitters anyway, what can be done? How can we maintan focus while progressing responsibly? An obvious solution would be proper development and rigorous testing going step by step towards the goal. Another solution albeit one not as obvious might be to take a big step back and evaluate the overall plan. Do we really need all these tools, buttons and levers? Do we need to present the user with million options when in reality most users are happy with maybe twenty percent of the options available? And what about the quality aspect? Are we spending enough resources on creating quality solutions benefitting all users? When it comes to AI its glaringly obvious the answer is no. Its all rushed with little thought given into effect and consequences. Isnt it time we grab ourselves by the tails and start working seriously with the aim of creating a progressive an truly useful IT world where we think of quality and proper solutions first and foremost?
